It’s been another cold and blustery day here. We are all well and truly over it. We were teased during the week with a couple of days hitting 20 C, when the blossoms burst from their buds and a couple of flies made their way into the house.
But today’s biting wind caused us to stay inside for most of the day – a quick walk up and down the street for the long-nosed hounds, a trip in the car to the shops and a brisk walk to the cafe for Rupie.
So the jumpers came out for ‘the girls’ and Rupie toughed it out cuddled up in his bean bag! (With the central heating on of course – he’s not as tough as he looks!).
Billie continues to grow in confidence each day. She’s now letting us know that she wants to be wherever we or the other dogs are, rather than being hidden away in a separate room like she did in the first few days. She greets us with a body waggle and a thump thump of the tail whenever we’ve been gone for more than a few minutes.
Last night, for the first time, all three dogs slept in the same room and had full access to the doggy door. We’ve had no toilet accidents, which is amazing for a dog who had never been inside a house before. I guess she’d always done her business outside so that’s what she continues to do – what a good girl!
Today, for the first time, I popped out a couple of times for a short period and left all three together inside. They seem quite content to sleep on their beds quietly when we’re not here (or so they lead us to believe!!).
I find it amazing how quickly these beautiful dogs adapt to a life of warmth and comfort. Billie had never been in a house before last Sunday and already she is much happier inside, lounging around on her soft bed!
She’s also now taking some treats directly from our hands and has realised how good they are. The poor girl would never have been given anything for no other reason than she’s loved. But she’s definitely getting the hang of it, without being greedy or looking for food. After our first night’s feeding incident, we now have a routine established and everyone knows who gets fed where and when (although I think hubby is still learning it!!).
Auntie Apie continues to be calm and gentle with Billie and Billie is now known as April’s Shadow! Uncle Rupie is still asserting his authority in a non violent way, but lets out his grumbles every now and again so Billie knows he’s there and is keeping an eye on her.
Billie is still getting the hang of walking further than the end of our street, but with the confidence she continues to gain, we’re sure it won’t be long before she’s doing the cafe trips and wooing the customers with her gentle nuzzles and piercing brown eyes! She is a handsome girl, that’s for sure.
